There are so many horses that lives end each year, not because of old age, or accidents, it's because their owners don't want them any more. And it's not fair to the horses that are innocent; I mean how would you feel if someone that took care of you just one day decided that they didn't want you anymore, so they just killed you because they didn't know how to get rid of you?
Today a very large percentage of conventional boarding environments are based more and more on the needs of the horse owners rather than the horse itself. When you keep your horse in a stall it causes them stress, and can cause heart and circulatory problems. With that, the lack of circulation, the horse begins to lose its bone density. And it's conformation flaws, and the hooves start to deform and break down.
In the equine there are tons of other horses that are slaughtered every year. The horse population grew drastically in the 1990's from three percent to five percent. So many horses are unwanted, between 1993 and 1994 slaughter decreased by 92,000 horses, more than the number that was slaughtered in 2002.
