Comparing dairy breeds
Holstein dairy cows originated in Europe. The Holstein cows have a distinctive color pattern they are usually black and whit with a spotted pattern, but there has been some with red and white spotted print pattern. Holsteins are known for outstanding milk production. A full grown Holstein weighs an average 1500 lbs; they range between 900-2000 lbs. Holsteins can live up to six years although many live considerably longer.
Jersey dairy cow originated on the Island of Jersey, a small British Island in the English Channel off the coast of France. Jersey cows are known for great milk and butterfat production in their milk. An average jersey cow weighs 900 lbs; they range between 800-1200 lbs. A jersey bull is known for the “least docile temperament”. Jersey cows were brought to the United States in 1850’s.
